83% and 54%. That's how much of the S&P 500's entire move on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, came from one stock — NVIDIA — despite neither day being an NVIDIA-specific story (Monday was Iran sanctions; Tuesday was a broad chip rebound).
NVIDIA is now large enough to be an amplifier, not just a headline. At ~7.9% index weight, its moves mechanically dominate the S&P 500's daily arithmetic — whether or not anyone is actually trading around NVIDIA specifically that day.
The thesis: the daily news may explain which direction the market goes. NVIDIA increasingly explains how far.
Wednesday raises the stakes materially. Scaling NVIDIA's own options-implied earnings move (5.4%, ~$280B) through its index weight puts ~0.43 percentage points of the S&P 500's move in NVIDIA's hands alone — before any other constituent reacts. On NVIDIA's own historical post-earnings range, that figure could run as high as 0.64 points.
If you own an index fund and think you sat this out — you didn't. Diversification protects you over years, not over a single session when one holding is nearly 8% of your fund.

Monday, 24 August: the S&P 500 fell 0.28% (to 7,652.86), the Nasdaq fell 0.76%. The macro backdrop included new U.S. sanctions on Iran (announced by Treasury Secretary Bessent), renewed U.S.-Canada tariff tensions, and broader pressure on technology stocks. It wasn't an NVIDIA-only sell-off: AMD fell 3.3%, Broadcom fell 2.6%, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 2.83% — a broad chip-sector retreat. NVDA fell 2.91%.
Tuesday, 25 August: the S&P 500 rose 0.32% (to 7,677.28), the Nasdaq rose 0.66%. The story flipped to a tech rebound ahead of Jackson Hole. Again, not NVDA alone: AMD jumped 4.91% (on its own catalyst — a Raymond James upgrade, unrelated to NVIDIA), Super Micro Computer surged 9.35%, Dell rose 4.23%, and the SOXX semiconductor ETF gained 1.56%. NVDA rose 2.19%.
So both days were genuine sector-wide moves — geopolitics and rates on Monday, an AI-hardware rebound on Tuesday — with real, independent catalysts hitting other chip names too. NVDA didn't manufacture either day on its own. But run the arithmetic on NVDA's specific contribution to the index, and something else becomes visible underneath the sector story.

NVDA is currently the S&P 500's largest constituent by weight, at ~7.94% (as of 19 August 2026, per fund-holdings data — sources cluster in the 7.9–8.0% range depending on provider and date, an economically negligible spread for this analysis). Multiplying weight by return gives each stock's approximate first-order contribution to the index's move:
Monday: 0.0794 × −2.91% = −0.231 percentage points — equivalent to roughly 83% of the S&P 500's −0.28% decline.
Tuesday: 0.0794 × +2.19% = +0.174 percentage points — equivalent to roughly 54% of the S&P 500's +0.32% gain.
To be precise about what that number does and doesn't say: this is NVDA's mechanical, first-order contribution to each day's index return — not a claim that NVDA "caused" the remainder, and not a claim about how much of any individual investor's portfolio return came from NVDA specifically. It's an arithmetic fact about index construction, not a causal one.
It's also worth being honest about what this arithmetic doesn't prove on its own. Once a stock is 8% of an index, it will mechanically explain a large share of any daily index move whenever it moves materially — that's true whether or not investors are positioning specifically around its earnings. Proving that Monday and Tuesday's NVDA moves were unusually large because of pre-earnings positioning (rather than just riding the same sector wave as AMD and Broadcom) would take additional evidence this piece doesn't have in hand — relative trading volume, options volume and open interest, implied volatility term structure, and index breadth data. What's demonstrable here is the mechanical amplification; what's suggestive but not proven is that positioning ahead of Wednesday's print is a meaningful part of why NVDA's moves were as large as they were.

This dynamic has shown up before, at larger scale, both around earnings and on an actual earnings reaction:
14 August 2025 — not an earnings day (NVIDIA's Q2 FY26 results were reported August 27, 2025, per the company's own release); this was pre-earnings positioning in the run-up to that report. NVDA rallied 8.2%. Per one contemporaneous market analysis (FXStreet, citing the day's price action), NVDA's move was credited with driving roughly 44% of the S&P 500's gain that session — reversing a 1.6% intraday loss into a +1.1% close. I haven't independently reconstructed this figure from primary tick data, so treat the specific percentage as one analyst's attribution rather than an audited fact — the direction of the claim is consistent with the mechanics described above.
27 February 2025 — an actual post-earnings reaction. NVDA fell 8.5%. The S&P 500 closed down 1.59% (5,861.57) and the Nasdaq fell 2.78% (18,544.42) the same session, with contemporaneous reporting (CNBC) explicitly describing NVIDIA's decline as pulling the tech-heavy index lower. Per CNBC's same-week reporting, the move wiped out approximately $273 billion in NVIDIA's market value, taking its market cap to $2.94 trillion.
Both are the earnings-day version of what Monday and Tuesday showed in miniature — except an actual earnings reaction moves the stock far more than an ordinary pre-print trading day does.

Options markets currently imply a 5.4% one-day move for NVDA after Wednesday's report — about $280B of market value swing, per Reuters (25 August). Two things are worth holding in mind about that figure together, because they cut in different directions:
It's a historically modest percentage move. 5.4% is below the 6.5% implied ahead of May's earnings and well below NVDA's 7.4% average post-earnings swing over the past 12 quarters (per ORATS). The options market is pricing a smaller-than-usual post-earnings move into this print.
It's still an enormous dollar figure. $280B exceeds the entire market capitalization of roughly 90% of individual S&P 500 constituents, on NVDA's implied move alone.
Scaling that 5.4% implied move through NVDA's 7.94% index weight: 0.0794 × 5.4% = ~0.43 percentage points of first-order S&P 500 impact — before any other constituent moves in response. If NVDA's realized move instead lands closer to its 12-quarter historical average of 7.4%, the first-order S&P 500 contribution scales to roughly 0.59 percentage points. And if it repeats either of the two precedents above (±8%+), the first-order contribution is roughly ±0.64 percentage points — from one company's earnings call, mechanically, before the other 499 constituents open for trading.

Reuters' 5.4% figure is one data point; NVDA's own options market shows the same thing a different way. As of the August 25 close, implied volatility for NVDA's nearest expiration (Friday, August 28 — the first to fully capture Wednesday's reaction) sat at 77.9%, roughly double the 41.9% and 39.5% implied for the September and October expirations respectively. That gap is the options market's mechanism for pricing a large one-day move into a single date: volatility priced into a contract that must absorb one binary event in two trading days is nearly double the volatility priced into contracts that dilute the same event over several more weeks. Two independently-derived numbers — a news-wire report and a live options-chain snapshot — are describing the same expected jump.
NVDA options open interest — nearest expiration strikes
There's a positioning detail worth noting too, with an important caveat: this reflects open interest at four specific strikes visibly prominent on the chain (not a complete strike-by-strike survey, so treat it as indicative of notable levels rather than an exhaustive positioning map). For the nearest (August 28) expiration specifically — the one that actually captures Wednesday's reaction — call open interest is concentrated well above the current $213.67 spot: 57.1K contracts at the $240 strike (+12%) and 42.9K at $220 (+3%), against comparatively light near-dated put open interest at those same levels (525 and 10.6K respectively). By contrast, the largest put concentration sampled — 66.3K and 62.1K contracts at the $180 strike (−16%) — sits almost entirely in the September and October expirations, which lines up with when NVDA last traded near that level (June 2026) and reads more as legacy hedging than a fresh earnings-specific bet. Taken together, the near-dated positioning skews toward calls above spot rather than protective puts below it — consistent with, though not proof of, an options market leaning toward an upside reaction.
NVDA same-day options volume — 25 August 2026
Same-day trading volume (25 August) adds a complementary read: at the $210 strike, essentially at-the-money against the $213.67 spot, call and put volume were nearly even — 46.1K calls versus 41.4K puts, both concentrated almost entirely in the nearest expiration (36.8K and 37.6K respectively). That's the signature of straddle- or strangle-type activity: traders positioning for the size of Wednesday's move rather than its direction. At the $230 strike (+7.7%), volume was heavily one-sided — 67.2K calls against just 1.8K puts, with 56K of that call volume in the nearest expiration alone — a distinctly directional layer of speculative call buying on top of the at-the-money straddle activity.

Mapping the move-size scenarios already discussed above onto those levels: the 5.4% options-implied move would put NVDA around $225 on the upside — just short of the resistance cluster — or around $202 on the downside, well clear of the support cluster. An 8% move, matching the two historical earnings-reaction precedents cited earlier, would put NVDA around $231 on the upside — landing directly at or through the resistance zone — or around $197 on the downside, still comfortably above the $190 support. In short: a historically-sized upside reaction would test a level the stock has already failed to clear recently, while an equivalent downside reaction wouldn't yet reach the nearest zone where the market has previously found support.

If you hold VOO, SPY, or a target-date 401(k) fund and don't own NVDA directly, NVDA's mechanical contribution still represented roughly 83% and 54% of the S&P 500's respective moves on Monday and Tuesday. That doesn't mean NVDA generated 83% of your total portfolio return those days — but it does mean that on any given session, a meaningful share of what a "diversified" index position actually delivers can be one company's idiosyncratic move.
Diversification reduces idiosyncratic risk over a portfolio's holding horizon. It does not prevent a single mega-cap constituent from dominating short-horizon index returns when that constituent is nearly 8% of the benchmark.

There's a legitimate second-order argument here, but it needs to be stated carefully rather than as an automatic mechanism. The chain runs roughly: NVDA moves → the index moves → index-level derivatives (SPX/SPY options, futures) reprice → dealers and market-makers hedge their resulting exposure → that hedging activity moves index futures and baskets → NVDA, as ~8% of any such basket, participates in those flows. At NVDA's current concentration, this can create a potential feedback loop between the stock and the index it dominates. It is not a claim that 0DTE hedging or passive rebalancing mechanically fires "because NVDA moved 3%" — vol-targeting strategies typically respond to realized or forecast volatility over longer horizons than a single session, and passive index funds don't generally rebalance intraday off a single constituent's move. The feedback loop is a real structural possibility at this level of concentration, not a proven same-day mechanism.

Concentration this extreme creates real, tradeable structure, because index-level implied volatility reflects both constituent volatility and the market's pricing of cross-stock correlation — not simply a blend or average of each constituent's expected move — while NVDA's own implied move is priced almost entirely off a single catalyst. The following are described for their mechanics, not as recommendations — none of this is investment advice, and actual sizing requires proper Greeks-based risk management that only you (or your broker/advisor) can do with full account information.
1. Dispersion — long single-stock volatility, short index volatility.
One version of this trade pairs long NVDA volatility exposure against short index volatility exposure, calibrated for comparable Vega or variance exposure between the two legs — not simply "buy an NVDA straddle, sell a SPY straddle or iron condor," which mismatches payoff structures and leaves the position's actual risk poorly defined. The idea: the position profits if realized correlation between NVDA and the rest of the index comes in below what was implied by the vol spread at entry — i.e., NVDA's earnings reaction is large and largely idiosyncratic, while the other constituents don't move much because of NVDA specifically, even if broader sentiment drifts with it. Worth flagging: institutional dispersion books typically short index volatility against a weighted basket of many constituents, spreading idiosyncratic risk across many uncorrelated catalysts. A single NVDA-versus-index pairing is a narrower, more concentrated cousin of that trade — it carries substantially more single-event tail risk, since the entire position's outcome rides on one company's earnings reaction rather than being diversified across a basket. The correlation risk cuts both ways: if NVDA's print triggers a genuine macro risk-off (as February 2025's reaction arguably did), index volatility can realize far more than usual at the same time NVDA's own move disappoints relative to its implied pricing — hurting both legs simultaneously.
2. Isolating NVDA-specific exposure from broad-market moves.
An investor who wants a view on NVDA's earnings reaction without inheriting this week's other major catalyst (the Jackson Hole Fed symposium, landing the same week) needs to hedge out NVDA's beta exposure to the broader index — not simply its index weight. These are different measures answering different questions, not just conceptually but in units: weight (~7.9%) describes how much of the index's return NVDA's own move mechanically contributes — a portfolio-share question. Beta (NVDA's reported 5-year value is approximately 2.2–2.4 depending on data provider; shorter-window estimates have been more volatile, ranging roughly 1.7–2.1 over the past year with a recent reading near 1.8) describes how much NVDA itself tends to move for a given move in the broader market — a sensitivity question. The two aren't comparable on the same numeric scale, and a hedge sized off weight when the goal is genuinely neutralizing market sensitivity will be mis-sized: the SPY (or futures) notional needed to offset a given NVDA position scales with its beta, not its index weight, so a beta near 2.2 implies needing roughly 2.2x the NVDA notional in offsetting exposure — not a hedge ratio derived from the 7.9% weight figure. The correct approach requires estimating NVDA's actual beta over the relevant window (or, for an options-based position, its delta-adjusted exposure) and rebalancing as that changes — particularly around an earnings event, when gamma effects mean the position's effective exposure shifts quickly as the stock moves.
3. Hedging existing index exposure against NVDA specifically.
The reverse case — an investor already holding SPY or an index fund who wants to reduce Wednesday's NVDA-specific risk to their portfolio without exiting the rest of their position — can use NVDA options sized as a starting point around index notional × NVDA's index weight (~7.94%). But this is only a first-order approximation: the actual hedge effectiveness depends on the option's delta relative to the underlying notional, and that delta moves quickly around an earnings event due to gamma. Treat the weight-based number as a starting estimate to be delta-adjusted, not a fixed hedge ratio.
4. Instrument choice matters.
This piece has used SPY throughout because the thesis is specifically about the S&P 500, but institutional desks evaluating this kind of exposure typically also look at SPX index options (the standard venue for pure S&P 500 volatility exposure), Nasdaq-100/QQQ, where NVIDIA has a materially larger index weight, and SOXX (concentrated semiconductor exposure) — each of which isolates a different slice of the same underlying dynamic, and each with different weight, liquidity, and expiration characteristics.
Expiration cadence is a real constraint here, not just a technicality. Same-day (0DTE) options exist daily for SPX and SPY, but NVDA's own listed expirations run Monday/Wednesday/Friday only — Thursday, the first regular session to fully absorb Wednesday's after-hours reaction, has no NVDA 0DTE contract, only the nearest listed expiration. A trader looking to react same-day to Thursday's open with a zero-day instrument is necessarily using SPX or SPY, not NVDA itself.

Wednesday's print, at NVDA's current 7.94% weight and with a documented history of 8%+ single-session earnings reactions in both directions, is positioned to be one of the most consequential single-company earnings events for the S&P 500 in the index's modern history. The headlines will explain Thursday's direction. NVIDIA will likely explain a large share of its magnitude.
