Industrial Production Index

What It Is

The Federal Reserve's Industrial Production Index — measures real output of the manufacturing, mining, and electric and gas utilities sectors.

Why It Matters

Industrial production is one of the four indicators the NBER uses to date US recessions. A sustained decline signals economic contraction, typically leading unemployment higher.

How To Read

Month-over-month declines for 2+ months = contraction signal. Year-over-year below -2% = recession territory historically. Rising trend = expansion.
