Core CPI (ex Food & Energy)

What It Is

CPI excluding food and energy prices — the Fed's preferred measure of underlying inflation trend. Smooths out volatile commodity-driven price swings.

Why It Matters

Fed policy is driven more by Core CPI than headline CPI. Persistent core inflation above 3% typically keeps the Fed in hiking mode.

How To Read

Stickier than headline CPI — once it rises, it takes longer to fall. A sustained decline in core CPI is necessary for the Fed to begin cutting rates.
